3 Ways to Know if Your Training is "Optimal"
Theres a lot of buzz in the fitness world about optimal training these days.
This is a product of the over-abundance of info we have regarding training now-a-days. In some ways this is better than the old days (when i started training in ‘07, all i had was an old Weider Bodybuilding book to learn from. Youtube would have helped me out a ton back then), but I suppose it has also caused a lot of lifters to overthink the usefulness of their training.
Instead of boring you with a bunch of studies, charts and guidelines, Im gonna cut to the chase and give you 3 ways to know your training is optimal for YOU beyond a shadow of a doubt👇
1- You make consistent progress.
Consistent doesn’t necessarily mean you PR every week, or have extreme jumps in progress. But it just means you trend upward consistently over a longer period of time.
If this is happening, its working.
2- You feel like you’re working hard, but you can still recover from your sessions:
A good training program should feel like youre working hard, but it shouldn’t feel absolutely bone crushing in the days after. (Stimulus to recovery ratio)
If you’re getting a lot out of your sessions, and can recover well enough between them to come back to the next session at full speed, chances are your training is pretty optimal for you.
3- If both of the above are true AND you enjoy your program:
Training enjoyment matters too. Even if every other variable is perfect, if you aren’t fully bought in or enjoying your program its not “optimal”…for you.
But if youre making progress, and you enjoy what youre doing. Stick with it til you wanna try something new.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
My takeaway message here: Don’t overthink everything, and not everything has to be confirmed by a study to know it works.
When it comes to your own training N=1 is always the most important.
Success leaves clues, and if youre seeing progress that youre happy with and enjoying the process, you are training optimally my friend. I don’t care what anyone on the interwebs tells you in their next rage-bait post.
