Recently, my client Brett V competed in the USPC Iron City Open and turned in another fantastic performance -
A 462lb squat- a 343lb bench press and a 571lb deadlift…at 48 years old nonetheless, leading him to a 1st place victory and the title of USPC Drug Tested Masters National Champ in the 275lb class.
While these were all huge meet PRs, theyre even bigger considering how much weight he has added to his lifts in just a little over 2 years working with me.
In a little over 2 years his:
Squat went from 290lb>462lb.
Bench press went from: 290lb > 343lb
Deadlift went from: 450lb> 571lb
For a total improvement of 334 lb.
How did this happen?
Quite simply, Brett came to me in April 2022 and wanted to take his lifts to the next level. He had been lifting a while but his numbers were stuck and he didnt know where to go next.
We focused on 3 Key Components Right off the bat:
1️⃣Optimizing His Technique and Leverages:
Brett is a big tall guy. So figuring ways to make his lifts more efficient and waste as little energy as possible while taking advantage of his strengths was key.
We switched his squat stance and bar position to a wider, low bar position to shorten his ROM and use his hips.
We moved his bench grip in to take advantage of his STRONG triceps and helped him to build an arch.
We moved his deadlift stance in slightly and taught him how to keep his arms long and pull the slack out of the bar.
2️⃣We built a program that allowed him to both build muscle and translate to strength gains:
To get his lifts moving- we focused on adding horsepower!
We built a program that carefully blended hypertrophy to help him fill out his frame, and maximized his strength by getting more proficient at higher percentage lifts.
3️⃣Building Confidence Under The Bar:
Beyond the physical realm- Brett and I focused extensively on how to improve his mindset to become great at lifting weights. THIS is what takes good lifters and makes them great. To fulfill your potential, you have to be strong of mind more than anything else.
As a result of this plan, Brett continues to improve and exceed all expectations.
