What Success Sounds Like
I spent my weekend coaching 3 of my lifters at a local powerlifting meet.
They performed great. 3 first place finishes, lots of PRs and a combined 18/22 on their attempts (roughly 85% completion rate).
But those numbers arent what stood out to me the most this weekend.
It was the language my athletes used.
“Trust the process.”
“I know I can do it.”
“I’m investing in myself.”
3 Different athletes. 3 Different backgrounds.
Yet each of them approached the weekend through a similar lens.
At first, I didn’t think much of it.
But on the drive home, I started reflecting on how often I hear similar phrases throughout the weekend.
Not just from one athlete.
From ALL of them.
And it reminded me of something I’ve come to believe after years of coaching.
The greatest impact we have as coaches isn’t teaching technique.
It isn’t writing programs.
It isn’t selecting attempts on meet day.
Those things 100% matter. Dont get me wrong.
But over time, the athletes we work with begin to adopt our way of thinking.
The best coaches don’t just teach people what to do.
They help shape how people approach challenges.
This weekend, I didn’t see athletes who were simply stronger.
I saw athletes:
Who trusted preparation over emotion.
Who focused on execution over outcomes.
Who believed in themselves because they had done the work.
The totals were great. The PRs were exciting.
But the thing I’m proudest of is seeing athletes develop the confidence, patience, and perspective required to pursue difficult goals.
Because those lessons don’t stop at powerlifting.
They carry into careers.
Relationships.
Business.
Life.
Strength training may be the vehicle were riding in.
But becoming a more capable person is the destination.
